YM Model Ken Block Ford Mustang RTR Hoonicorn – In memory of a Legend FEATURETTE

One last journey...

Ken Block: When this name was mentioned, car fans of extreme sports got shiny eyes: rally driver, showmaster, role model for millions of car enthusiasts died in a snowmobile accident right at the very beginning of this year 2023 on January 2nd in Utah, USA, leaving many in shock. Ken Block had become world-famous through advertising, video games and especially his Gymkhana videos. Behind this is a kind of skill course, which is navigated as quickly as possible with a mixture of drifting and rallying. In 2014, Ken Block had a new piece of equipment built for himself.

A fabulous vehicle...

Hoonicorn V1, the world's only 1965 Ford Mustang hardtop coupé with four-wheel drive. The four-wheel transmission was urgently needed as well, because the pony car has been heavily modified. A V8 with 410 cubic inches was part of the Hoonicorn V1, which is equivalent to 6,720 cubic centimetres. The engine produced around 857 hp and 976 Newton metres of torque, the gears were changed sequentially through six gears. The Hoonicorn V1 made its biggest appearance beside numerous events eight years ago in Los Angeles:

One evolutionary step further...

In 2016, Ken Block had given his 1965 Mustang two massive turbochargers. This suddenly turned 850 hp into more than 1,400 horses. Thanks to two massive Garrett turbochargers and methanol injection, the Hoonicorn now produces a whopping 1,400 hp, and the Mustang was still four-wheel drive. The exhaust pipes ended just a few centimetres behind the compressors. Directly in the driver's field of vision, flames shoot up with every burst of gas.

Literally bursting with detail: The Mustang RTR Hoonicorn V2

A new bonnet with larger cut-outs was needed for the new turbos and the exhaust pipes. There was also a new paint job. The old green and black monster look had to give way to a grey base colour, and the bonnet was painted in the Stars & Stripes design. Perfect conditions to climb the legendary Pikes Peak hill in 2017 in typical Ken Block style:

Saying goodbye on a scale of 1:64...

Around 3 years ago, both evolutionary stages of the Hoonicorn were released by YM Model in 1/64th scale. Both impressed with a great attention to detail and were available at the time of release for under $40. This has now changed abruptly due to the death of Ken Block. After only a short time, the remaining models were sold out or could be bought at prices beyond the 100$ mark. But here is the all-clear: From April this year, the first Hoonicorn V1 and Hoonitruck models from Street Weapon should be delivered to pre-orderers. But you should hurry, because according to the cover, only 1000 pieces will be available at a price of just under $35.
